While I’m an enjoyer of some sci fi movies, I am not a typical sci fi reader and only picked this up because it was getting such good reviews on booktok. I’m so glad I did! This book had everything that a good sci-fi should be - fast paced, compelling characters, an apocalyptic event threatening to destroy the human race.

I was surprised how quickly I could pick up the “science stuff” and Andy Weir did a good job of making incredibly technical and complicated physics understandable to the average reader.

But the best part of this book was Dr. Grace and
his space buddy, Rocky. I need a million more books with Rocky in it. I never knew I could become so emotionally attached to a space alien, but multiple times I found myself gripping my book in anticipation, hoping that Dr Grace and Rocky would overcome their adversity and save their respective planets.

Even though this book was about a depressing mid-apocalyptic universe, Weir manages to keep this tale light hearted and genuinely optimistic about human nature and our collective survival. There are some heavy elements throughout but nothing was so bleak or depressing that I found myself not wanting to continue.

I need a sequel to Project Hail Mary, stat!
More Rocky, please!

2024: CHEF'S KISS

2022: One of the easiest 5 stars I've ever given!! This book was the Goodreads Choice winner for Sci-Fi for 2021 and it absolutely deserved it. I laughed out loud, I teared up, I whooped for joy (on the inside.) This book ran me through my emotional paces and it was an extremely enjoyable read. Have you ever read a sci-fi book that seems to lean on a lot of made-up, implausible scientific mechanics? This book is not like that. Andy Weir's dedication to real, tangible astrophysics and mathematical calculations make it so easy to immerse yourself in this story. The protagonist, Ryland, walks you through all the math right as he's doing it -- and his quirky, gregarious attitude makes him so lovable. The relationship he develops with the second protagonist is so heartwarming and genuine. Honestly, if you are a lover of sci-fi, if you're averse to sci-fi, if you've been wronged by sci-fi novels in the past, this book is a breath of fresh air and I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this! The scientific explanations went over my head a bit so I did find myself skipping big chunks of the book because I just didn’t understand what was going on.
It’s sort of the same characters and formula (ish)  ‘The Martian’ used, but I guess if you’ve found something that works stick to it!
Overall it was an interesting read, and I really loved Rocky.
