My 2025 fictional crush is officially Rocky. ❤️ THIS BOOK filled my soul. The story will make anyone love books. I can’t wait to see the movie, but there is no way it will be better than the book.

A space travel book about friendship and humanity and science and working together. It was all the good things about life mashed into one perfect story that I will remember forever.

So. Much. Science.

It was good but a very slow read for me. I heard the audiobook is better for us with less science knowledge, maybe should have switched to that.

Who would’ve thunk I’d enjoy a sci-fi book this much? I read this one via audio, and the narration was phenomenal and added so much life and personality to the story.

At first, I worried that following one man alone in space for an entire book might get repetitive, but it never did. Grace’s voice was funny, relatable, and easy to connect with, which made the isolation feel engaging instead of dull. As he slowly regains his memories, we get flashbacks that fill in his backstory and introduce other characters, keeping the narrative fresh and layered. And there’s a surprise I don’t want to spoil, but it was hands-down my favorite part of the whole book—it completely elevated the story.

On the flip side, the book does dive deep into science and math. Personally, I could’ve done with a little less of that since my brain is not exactly a science brain. That said, I can see how it’s important for grounding the story in realism and raising the stakes making the mission feel believable.

Overall, I was so pleasantly surprised by how much of a delight this book turned out to be. Even if you don’t usually read sci-fi, this one might just win you over with its wit and charm.

It's not that the writing is out-of-this world (see what I did there), in that the prose is not, say, poetic, but it's damn engaging...every page of it, and the science, of which there is quite a bit, is clearly explained for dummies like me. I haven't enjoyed a character as much as I have Rocky in years...well drawn out, well written, perfect dialogue, his words and choices consistent with his character as written...so much fun...it was impossible not to fall in love with and root for him. Also, in a literary world where endings don't always land...or, at least, are not always fully satisfying/gratifying, Weir's ending here is delightful. Impossible not to smile as you close the back cover over the final page.
