Made me love Trevor Noah more. Hearing of his childhood alongside Apartheid gave a really unique perspective on this dark time in South African history.

I am so glad I re-read this book. Audio is 100% the move - Trevor does all of the accents phenomenally which takes the book up a notch. I really cannot recommend this book enough.

My ultimate takeaway is to be compassionate towards everyone, especially in this world of classism where it is so difficult to break the cycle of poverty due to not having the right resources. Trevor Noah tells the story of how he broke the cycle in his family, and while incredibly inspiring, he also highlights that even he had privileges due to his skin color and education that many others did not have.

I was so invested that when the audiobook ended I was like “wait WHAT? That’s it???” I wanted to learn so much more about his life!

Having parents who grew up in apartheid, this one especially hit home for me. This book will stay with me for a while.

Wow, just wow! That ending… wow!

Let me start off by saying that I absolutely love Trevor Noah. I’ve seen every episode of his of the Daily Show, watched a few of his stand ups, and even got to see him perform live. He’s also one of few male celebrities I follow on Instagram. Anyways, the point is, I’m a fan! Yet it took me a while to finally decide to pick up his book to read. But let me tell you, this book did not disappoint.

Trevor Noah’s life is incredible. I learned so much more about him in his memoir. To be born as a mixed-race kid in South Africa during apartheid, a life like that can’t be easy. I was so anxious reading this book as some of the stories Trevor tells are terrifying. Of course, we know it all works out for him in the end, but in the moment, reading about those experiences, it was hard to see how he did/would overcome those moments. And yet despite how horrifying some of the situations he described were, he added humor in between those stories. For me, that really helped to alleviate the tension and made this book enjoyable to read.

My favorite chapter has to be “Go Hitler!” I laughed out loud reading that section. It was absolutely hilarious!! And the most heartbreaking chapter is “My Mother’s Life”. I nearly cried reading those last few pages. I love the relationship Trevor has with his mother and I love how influential she has been in his life. And then some other chapters that were fun to read include the 3 part saga of “A Young Man’s Long, Awkward, Occasionally Tragic, and Frequently Humiliating Education in Affairs of the Heart.” Those we’re such great stories!

So overall, I’d say I rate this book a solid 4.5 - 5 stars! Well done!
