Picked up on my return from Crete. The setting is well sketched and my favorite part was seeing the differences in anglo tourism from the early 60s to today. The descriptions of the Greeks are somewhat racist. The romance is mostly the story of an independent young woman who happily knuckles under to the dominant male. I did like the gay thief who manages to escape capture. Not something that needs re-reading.
Just finished rereading it after many year. Still holds up as a good mystery, although some of the dialogue hasn't ages well.
I really enjoy reading Mary Stewart’s romantic suspense novels, this was no exception and makes you want to take a holiday in Greece

This is my second book by the author and I think she is just not for me.

I think I had never read this one before. A young woman goes for a holiday on Crete and gets mixed up with a criminal gang. As a suspense novel, it was quite good, with lots of surprise twists. I just had a hard time with the gender stereotypes, although I suppose one might expect them, given that the book was originally published in 1962. Decent but not one of my favorite Mary Stewarts.
