Someone better informed as to Chilean politics will enjoy this more than I was able to; much of the irony went over my head. I will enjoy this more upon reread.

  • Made an exception to my “life is too short to read about some shitty guy” rule
  • This is a desperate, defensive deathbed rambling of a cowardly and snobby Chilean Opus Dei priest who is haunted by a phantom youth making accusations about his moral character
  • It recounts his life, his cognitive dissonance, the mundanity of dissociating from political turmoil, and his frenzied last ditch effort to absolve himself of his moral failings, silence, and complicity in the Pinochet fascist regime
until he ultimately realizes that the phantom youth accusing and haunting him was his own younger self all along
  • No chapters no paragraphs just feverish stream of consciousness. Gripping and well-paced
