Despite being in the Cosmere, I was able to follow with little knowledge of the Cosmere. Although, it probably would have given greater context to events.
I read this book last of his 4 project books and was glad to see a difference. Two of them followes the trope of the anti-hero discovering their heroism, while this one was of a fallen hero rising back up. Brandon Sanderson definitely has a strong voice in his writing, but keeps it unique with the worlds his characters live on and explore.

In the post script for this book, Sanderson states this book is a bit of an experiment and more about establishing lore and character for the cosmere. This is regrettably the case as I care more about what Nomad tells us happened leading up to his stay on Canticle (and where he is going) than I do about the plot, supporting characters, or setting of this book. This story moves almost too fast and is couldn't bring myself to love it as much as the rest of the cosmere.
