A fun, romantic lesbian adventure. Fantasy, of course, but well-written, with lots of twists and turns. More of the escapist fiction to which our current political situation has driven me. But, hey, if you need to getaway, why not go a-pirating with Darren and Lynn? A fun romp.

Maybe it's just me, but I find Lynn too needlessly annoying to be likable. I LOVE sassy protagonists but this one is too heavy on the attitude for me. *shrug*

I do like Darren though. She's pretty cool. I mean, she's a pirate queen so...

Other than Lynn's personality, my main problem with the book was not feeling enough of a spark between the two partners. I don't get the sense that they're developing feelings for each other - or that they even have any physical attraction - when suddenly they're in bed and then somehow they're a couple? At first it doesn't seem like either has feelings for the other, then for a while it looks like Darren has feelings but Lynn doesn't feel the same way/might just be using her, but in the end it's a long-term relationship and I don't really understand how it got there from the emotional perspective. I understand that going through a lot of hardship and adrenaline-pumping situations can lead people to develop feelings for each other, but the development of their feelings of love isn't given any attention. It's mostly frustration with each other and conflict between two people trying to get their way.

Overall, it's a decent read. Nothing amazing or particularly memorable. I've read several lesbian pirate books that actually gave me feels, whereas this one didn't.

4.5 stars. I loved this book. Unique and enjoyable. Mystery and plenty of humour. Well worth a read. I should have read it earlier.

This is a really interesting and unique dynamic: the himbo pirate queen who is noble and good-hearted, paired with the second in command who is trying to mould her into a ruthless and feared pirate queen instead of the ineffective do-gooder with noble intentions she is.

Lynn is a really interesting character and I enjoyed getting to understand her plan and backstory. Admittedly, I didn't think it could live up to her answer about being a certain important noblewoman: "No. And yes. And no." but it does.

There's a lot of snappy banter, and chaotic but well-meaning idiots enacting absolutely idiotic plans and I was rooting for them to pull it off all the way.

Immediately on my favorites read this year. This is up there with Compass Rose for me and I'm reading the sequel as soon as I can. Also plan on tearing through all the author's work as it's like it was made for me?

Make sure you clear your calendar before you start this book. Not just because it's excellent, but because you will want to know if everyone is okay in the end. It's got incredible characterization and swashbuckling adventure, but also some incredibly dark moments. Heed the content warnings. But if you can, absolutely give this one a read.
