this book felt like drinking a pineapple tequila in the sun. wow. what a brilliant exposition on solitude. solitude in family, in power, in marriage, in suffering, in work, in knowledge, in love, in war, in life, in death.
it’s about the buendia family living in macando. it’s about how each line repeats the mistakes of the former. it’s about how trauma, struggles of loneliness, lust and cruel love repeat itself in a circular way.
each character has a detailed storyline, vulnerable emotions, and their own main event. my favorite character was ursula as she just seemed like a woman who did all the things and her tolerance was unmatched. jose arcadio buendia was so unhinged. like when they brought in the chestnut tree i was like what but also like lol.
gabriel garcia marquez writes in such a captivating way. you clearly can picture this town, you can vividly feel the emotions of the characters, and you understand the family dynamics as if you’re part of the tree. he always writes about love in such a vivid and passionate way and i’ve always admired his portrayal of women.
an excellent read.
…
“and they prayed that such wild passion would not disturb the peace of the dead.”
“she felt so much alone that she sought the useless company of her husband, who had been forgotten under the chestnut tree.”
“it was as if the defects of the family and none of the virtues had been concentrated in both.”
“the secret of a good old age is simply an honorable pact with solitude.”
“it’s as if the world were repeating itself.”
“her whole life had been spent as if it had been raining.”
“and had brought her to that frying pan of hell where a person could not breathe because of the heat.”
“she shuddered with the evidence that time was not passing, as she had just admitted, but that it was turning in a circle.”

I really hated this in the beginning, then after a short break I started again and stopped focusing on understanding who the characters were but rather enjoy the narrative in general.
Graphic: Adult/minor relationship, Sexual content
