A long time ago, I read Maria V. Snyder’s novel Poison Study—a novel about a woman who becomes a poison taster. It was one of my favourite books as a teenager. It intrigued me, it captivated me, it brought me great delight. I got those exact feelings reading The Apothecary Diaries Vol. 1.

I adore Maomao. She's such an interesting character. Her internal voice is genuine so much fun to read. I loved seeing her figure things out.

I also really loved how the novel explores the themes of gender and patriarchy.

Overall, a really fantastic start and I can't wait to read the other volumes.

The writing is a little bare bones. Don’t get me wrong, it still manages to be very pretty. But there’s a lot of reading between the lines you have to get used to and it makes the mysteries seem a little truncated. Still, very fun characters and I want to see more of Jinshi and Maomao 👀
