There's a whole lot of information here, and I'm not going to lie...I did skim parts where it got really historical/allegorical. But the story of Charlie (who is fictional, but seems like he could and should be real) and the evolution of his art is what grabbed me and kept me reading.

I'm not really sure how to rate this since I read it for class and know that this book has so much to offer!

I think that this was a very important, fresh, and unique graphic novel. I loved the art style(s) and everything flowed together quite nicely. This is the first time I have encountered Singapore's history so that was very valuable to me as a reader! I think if I reread this a couple of times and did some more research about the colonial history of Singapore (and other Asian countries), I would gain a lot more from this! So, for now, it's a 3 star, but I hope to come back to this and learn some more in the future!

Such an amazing take on Singapore’s history, masterfully recounted.

This book manages to do many things and tell many stories, with amazing artwork and writing. I am not usually a fan of comics/graphic novels, but this book enthralled me, making it difficult to put down. I like the multiple layers in this book, which is not just about the life of the fictional Charlie Chan, but also a deeper look at the Singapore history, the storytelling of alternative perspectives, and even a fictional tale of how different it could have been. It is a little nostalgic, often funny (with the kind of satirical humour I enjoy), sometimes touching, and towards the end, slightly sad. More importantly, this book makes you think, and prompts you to find out more about the historical events, the people that we don't usually get to hear about, and from there, gain that perspective to build your own understanding.

It's a pretty good introduction to Singaporean history in satirical cartoon form.
