You could feel Robert against your skin, that's how real the book felt to me. It's not because I found it relevant because I didn't and everything I know of love, I learnt from books and TV (lol).

However, it gives off this strange vibe of realness and truth and love, not sugarcoated love, but love that is pure but tainted with lies - you know it's love because he has scrubbed the dirt off with his hanky that you can hardly see the spots, really.

Hornby has exploited men's deepest and darkest thoughts on relationships and the opposite sex through tongue-in-cheek writing, excellent music (!!!), and sheer good humour. I definitely recommend it.

The main character reminded me of someone I knew very well. An absolute arsehole, but loved him nonetheless.

Such a strange feeling is to have a love-hate relationship with a book.
I was first introduced to 'High Fidelity' the film when I was about 13 years old and it was a climactic experience. It was the first film (if I recall correctly) that showed me the importance of music and its discovery. When the series came out, I was in college and my standards were changing. I knew more about music and could see myself in the music enthusiast heroine played by Zoe Kravitz. As for the book, I, of course, enjoyed recollecting all the details I used to love years back, and I still relate to Rob (red flag). But I can't get away with how of a shitty partner (justice for Laura), a snob and a miserable person he is, and how, ironically or not, the author describes him. For example, when listing his top five American films, Rob picks two Coppola's (the first two Godfathers), two Scorsese (Taxi Driver and Goodfellas) and one Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs), which just seems the perfect 'cinéma snob' archetype and not the perfect hero redeeming his actions.

I so enjoyed this book, it's ridiculous. I loved his realistic approach to relationships, love, and adulthood. It was so relatable and, at times, disconcerting because it also felt hopeless. He did such a free job characterising his protagonist that sometimes it felt hard to believe in him or see anything but pity. Still I loved reading it and is a fantastic read for fans of David nicholls as well.
