Maybe a 3.5 rating? Book club classic genre book. Glad that I read it and surprised that I never had. The book is completely different than what I had imagined. I guess Mel Brooks and Young Frankenstein had more influence than I thought. Victor Frankenstein has had an idyllic upbringing. He has read physics and philosophy and enjoys learning. He is influenced by some writers that believe that life can be created by other men and not through the help of a woman. When he goes to University, many professors tell him that he has been unduly influenced by crackpot beliefs. Thus sets Victor on a quest to prove them wrong. He is successful in bringing his demon to life. The creature is hideous but learns quickly. Frankenstein abandons the creature. The creature cannot live in society because people fear him and shun him without ever trying to understand him. Because of this the creature begins to take vengeance out on his creator. He begins by killing Victor’s youngest brother and then continues. He tries to force Frankenstein to make him a companion so that he will have someone to keep him company. Victor refuses and the creature continues his killing spree. After killing Elizabeth, Victor finally vows revenge on the creature and the chase is on as he chases the creature to the north pole. Victor is picked up by a boat on expedition to the north pole and tells his story to the boat captain Robert Walton. Then he dies.

So viel zum Thema, ob eine Nullfokalisierung ästhetische Sprache erschwert. Ich bin sehr gespannt auf unsere Diskussion.

Read this with "Frankenstein Weekly" in 2023 and really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed reading with Romantic Circles' annotations for as long as I was able to, but time constraints made that not realistic for me past a certain point. Would love to follow along with them for a reread.
