I wanted to come back to this book to review because why not and maybe I will do more reviews like this, probably not though.
The characters are all pretentious assholes, there I said it, but they all have their flaws and things that make you like them a little bit at least.
Though I did expect everyone to kiss in this book or be a thing, I was like these two should date, not these two. but whoever gets with who I am just having a good time that is for sure.
I resonated with Libby more than I thought I would, but her anxiety really came through and her just asking all the questions to be absolutely sure of something, that is me all over.
The only character that I ever had trouble liking out of the main 6 was Callum and I am hoping for that to change in the second book because there is definitely more to him than we get to see. But if not oh well I will continue to root for the others over him. no biggie.
Give me fantasy elements, dark academia and asshole characters that have to interact, and I am probably gonna have a great time!! I am excited to see where this series will take us too next

This is definitely a predominantly character-driven novel, but the characters are so interesting and lushly written that it often feels like so much is going on anyway (even though it isn't really). It's one of those books where you feel like you can't really trust anyone as they all have ulterior motives (morally gray). It's very mysterious in their motives coming to light, and learning more about all the characters magical abilities.
Also def everyone is queer, like there's no question in my mind that this will develop in the next books...
I cannot wait for the continuation of the series!
3/5🌶
Graphic: Blood, Death, and Sexual content
Moderate: Hate crime, Gun violence, Mass/school shootings, Violence, Toxic relationship, Adult/minor relationship, and Suicide
Minor: Alcohol, Drug use, Terminal illness, and Child death
Many of the above moderate TW are described in past tense (fairly vaguely) as part of character's background stories.snowy05's review against another edition

These characters are all intensely written, and amazing flawed. I do wish there was more time spent on certain characters, and less time spent on side plots that in the end I felt were distracting more than helpful. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the sequel.

The magic is vague, which I was totally fine with. But the plot is also very vague, and I didn't care. And the characters are also vague most of the time. What they think, what their intentions are. And some of them are truly annoying. But I still loved all of them in the end, even the one's that I disliked?
I just really really enjoyed the character dynamics and their interactions. It was just a lot of fun. And it was enough to make me fly through the book. I couldn't put it down. The narrative structure, the dialogues, all the vague mysteries made the pacing work really well for me.
I have to say that I read the e-book while listening to the audiobook, and I think the narrators are fantastic. I very much enjoyed listening to the different point of views, and it was easier to ignore some of the more pretentious lines and dialogues this way.
I'm happy I don't need to wait for the sequel all too long now.
