Beautiful story! I love when I can feel the emotion oozing out of the book. This one definitely had me teary-eyed.

In true CoHo fashion, SLAMMED is an emotional love story, with plenty of twists thrown in + revolved around slam poetry, which was a really engaging added concept. Layken + Will were a super cute couple: I warmed to both of them + I loved the will they/won’t they (pun maybe intended) of their romance, the relationship both had with their siblings, the connection through similar traumas + that Will was supportive of Lake even when he couldn’t be romantically involved.

But.. ultimately I felt the intensity + believability was missing. I think this was down to a mixture of their ages + the major insta-love at the start of the book. Parts felt more obviously YA than othersβ€” Lake felt very immature at times + the fact she was only 18 was reflected in her behaviour, whereas Will was the total opposite + I kept forgetting he was only 21. I think this would work even better if Will was maybe in his 30s and Lake late 20s.. at uni maybe?

Nonetheless, this was a sweet + emotionally charged read with great character DEVELOPMENT + I LOVED the slam poetry. It gave me major Tom Macdonald vibes πŸ™ŒπŸΌ (a spoken word artist). I had no idea this was Colleen’s DEBUT novel, but on reflection can also see how much her writing style has developed in recent years.

Reminded me of a fanfiction written by a 12 year old.

Oh my heart! That ending had me bawling! I can’t wait to continue Will & Lake’s story and see where they end up. This story is so powerful and emotional. From struggling with the death of her father to meeting an amazing guy who ends up being off limits then being hit with her mothers diagnosis Lake is juggling more then any 18 year old should in their senior year of high school. This is not my top favorite of Colleen Hoovers but I’m still floored non the less by the ending which I think may of been the best way to end this. (Honestly probably wouldn’t need a series but I’m still going to read the series anyway because come on it’s Colleen Hoover)

TW: Cancer. Death. Loss of a parent.
