For me, this book had an interesting premise but suffered from poor writing. There were obvious mistakes in the editing process, such as a reference to an animal companion character at one point that had not been mentioned before and was never mentioned again. It focused on a trio of "main character, food-obsessed comic relief friend, and smart female character whom they don't get along with at first," which for me is just too overdone and reminiscent of Harry Potter. I think this one just wasn't for me.

This would make a wonderful tv series for children: the quest, the colors (or lack thereof), the people are all described so clearly that you can't help but feel as though you're there. In a more visual medium some of the problems with the book, like distances not quite making sense or the characters being rather flat. One of the best parts were the stories, chapters from their Book of Cuentos that help guide Tor, Melda and Engle as they hunt for the Night Witch. Will the next book be as visual or will it suffer from sophomore series slump? I can't wait to find out.

Fast paced, middle grade fantasy! Couldn’t put this one down.
Middle grade. Main characters are 12.
I really liked this a lot and am looking forward to the sequel - which I’ve already requested from the library. I’m not sure how realistic it is that they’re 12 but it isn’t meant to be realistic.

Quite enjoyable tale of an island where each person has an Emblem that shows their specialty in life: such as being a leader, or being good at baking, breathing underwater, etc. But when Tor does not want to be a leader and wishes away his Emblem, he becomes cursed and must journey to the Night Witch to battle her and have it removed.
While parts of it dragged on a bit for me, I was also quite hooked on the story.

This is an amazing start to a new fantasy series! Based in part on Latinx legends, it is non-stop action. The world-building is both highly detailed and incredibly imaginative. I could easily see this being translated to the screen. Give this one to fans of Rick Riordan and other fantasy adventures. Highly recommended for grades 4 & up.
