Read roughly 60 pages. Even for a children’s book — barely juvenile writing at best. I downloaded this book on kindle. I read the first 5 chapters of her other book Lightlark. I wanted to compare her writing styles. The metaphors were, disconnected. I feel the premise of the book could have been better, but if it wasn’t for such a juvenile style of writing and error in structure, I feel like both of these books could have been written much better. I absolutely expect better writing from a summa cum laude from UPenn.

3.5 stars. I don’t read a lot of middle grade books anymore, but I found the author on Instagram so I figured I’d give it a shot.
I’d probably rate this closer to 3 stars as an adult, but if my middle grade self was reading this book I would have given it 5 stars. I would have been all about this book when I was younger!

It was poorly written. I could not get into it.
Holy adventure, Batman! My mouth is still hanging opening. A marvelous middle grade tale but Oh. My. Word. It’s just the beginning of a series and it hasn’t even released yet. I’m going to need an ARC for every book in the series. Tor, Engle, and Melda set off to rid themselves of a curse and find more than adventure along the way as friendships form and they learn more about themselves; “there are many ways to be strong that don’t require a sword.” Percy Jackson meets every dark and spooky monster tale you’ve heard in this story that is packed with courage and the unexpected. It is a must read for fantasy readers and those who love an exciting new adventure.

Wow, I really really enjoyed this book. This book gives you large Percy Jackson vibes, The Starless Sea writing style, The Thief adventure plotline, and most of all Harry Potter friendship. All three great books/series that make you enjoy every last minute. Although this book is like the ones I mentioned prior it is its own book with its own unique mythologies and world building. The book itself is made for a younger audience, middle school age, but I still was captivated nonetheless. It is very VERY fast paced so it makes for an easy, quick read to get you out of a reading slump but leaves you wanting more. Each chapter is a new thing they have to defeat, and although I did love the fast pace I think it would've been nice to lengthen some of the action scenes and give more details because the mythology behind the character is SO GOOD.
Aster's writing style is amazing. Like I said before it keeps you entertained at a fast pace without making you feel lost. She introduces the plot and foreshadows in a way I have never seen an author do before, especially in a novel made for a younger crowd. Between the chapters there are stories supposed to be from the Storyteller's book they are following. In these I think is some of the best writing. It's written in a very poetic way, giving readers vivid imagery in which they can incorporate in the next chapter.
The characters are great they remind me a lot of Ron, Hermione, and Harry. The way their friendship developed was very well done and I loved seeing them grow as characters. Engle was my favorite by far.
The book itself is just a great one for anyone ANY age. The fast paced, light hearted atmosphere this book creates will stay with you long after you finish the book.

The world was super interesting and unique but the characters and story were very cliche and it ended up not impressing me much as a result. I would definitely read more from this universe but not from these characters.
