Kept reading even though I wanted to abandon. Wouldn't recommend for younger audiences, there were defined some spooky bits. I know there are more to the series but I'm not hooked enough to read more.
I listened to the Audiobook version and it was really great! This is a perfect book for fans of Percy Jackson or Cece Rios and the Desert of Souls. Adventure, enemies (that may or may not be enemies), unlikely friendships, dark fantasy...it was a great read.
Super cute read and amazing fast pacing. Loved all the characters and how it kept me on my toes although it was predictably YA (on the younger side). Would genuinely read the sequel if I find it.
For me, as an adult reader, the overall plot felt a little by the numbers. A child makes a wish. It doesn't go as he planned. He and two other kids are sent on a quest. They face a series of exciting/scary challenges. A twist at the end sets up book two in the series.
It's hard for me to be impressed anymore by fantasy worlds built on labeling people by their dominant traits or talents. There are soooooo many of these, especially in YA. Still, I'm sure kids will enjoy imagining what emblem they would want. It makes me think of the picture book [b:Patchwork|60239733|Patchwork|Matt de la Peña|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1646034498l/60239733._SX50_.jpg|94992203] which is about how we pigeonhole children.

This is one of my favorite books ever!
It has lovable characters, a great plot, a fun adventure, and an interesting world. What more could you want? I’ve now read it twice, and will definitely read it again.
I particularly liked that the adults were reliable, even if they didn’t get much screen (or page, I suppose) time. No one was dumb. They were funny and smart and likable. And they felt REAL.
Recommended for fans of “Percy Jackson,” “Fablehaven,” grand adventures, and fantastic characters! Bravo! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I received this book from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this! Super fun and you know I love a good quest. The concept is fascinating - everyone is born with an emblem that describes their talent. I can only imagine how that could feel suffocating! So when a wish goes awry, our heroes end up on a quest to rid themselves of a curse.
The way the legends and stories of the island are woven into the book is very cleverly done, as is the way they lead the quest. Tor, Melda and Engle get to see island life outside their village, and meet so many fantastic people who all love differently.
I also love how we get to see that they make mistakes and grow throughout. It really is a fantastic adventure story that I highly recommend! I will definitely be picking up book 2! 4.5 stars.
