Sweet jesus, it's amazing. My first graphic novel, and it won't be my last.
Alan Moore is a genius. There is no question about that. But will you enjoy WATCHMEN? I think that largely depends on two things:
First of all, as with all stories, are you willing to believe in the world he's created.
Secondly, and probably more importantly, how much you are willing to invest in the story.
Because Watchmen's strength does not solely lie in the main arc. For me, it's the characters, the choices they face, and how the experiences of the past have shaped them.
All these stories twist together, intertwine, and influence each other. It takes effort to follow them and pick up the things that remain left unsaid, but are no less important. Even upon the third reading, I still found new things to marvel over.
It's a candid look at what it's like being human. Moore pulls no punches. Whether you agree with the choices the protagonists make or not. At least it makes you think. And that's never a bad thing.
In my rating it loses one star, because a certain plot-point introduced near the end of the book, could have done with better earlier hints and then it gets over-explained.
