The absolute magnum opus of graphic novels and literature. I hold this book up as paragon, but yet in some ways I feel as though this book is a little too obvious and heavy handed at times.
Metaphors are made obvious, although there is the surface metaphor that can be perceived by the average reader, and then there are additional questions that may be examined by the more knowledgeable reader. Reading and analyzing Ozymandias and then comparing the poem to Dr. Manhattan's section absolutely made my head spin, and left me with more arguments in a question that always runs through my head about time as the great leveler.
The characters may seem overwhelming at first, but the interaction between the various characters, even the more insignificant ones, prove to be this novel's greatest strengths. Juxtaposing the "superheroes" with the more ordinary characters was insightful and powerful.
The plot is complicated, and unique for a superhero novel. It uses old hero tropes to advance, but spins them in a thoughtful, different, and roundabout manner by acknowledging and commenting on various stereotypes and standards. Watchmen, which often teases the reader by commenting on itself, seems to always be on the verge of breaking the fourth wall.
You've probably been told to read this by everyone you know. Do it. This is an absolute classic, and I think there's plenty more here that I have yet to pick apart just yet, such as the varying use of colors in different situations. Dense, complex, and still beautiful on its surface.

This is my first ever comic (adult) book—i gotta say the opening scene really impressed me. It begins as an ultra close up that slowly turns into high angle wide shot. The illustration is awesome, some parts of the story were more interesting than others. Overall, i’m glad that i finally read it after i bought it a year ago. I’m excited to see the film and the tv series based on this.
I read this for the first time when I was 16 years old and I thought it was incredible, but after a re-read, I realized that I didn’t fully comprehend some of the more intricate metaphors or intimate aspects of the characters.
I absolutely recommend this for anyone, although I admit this book isn’t for everyone. Still a classic nonetheless.
