“We gaze continually at the world and it grows dull in our perceptions.”

It’s obvious why this is regarded as one of the best and most influential graphic novels of all time.

As a breakdown of the superhero-genre, it offers a vast array of complex characters and an even greater assortment of both distinct and subtle messages. Many of which I’m sure I have yet to discover.

Being no artist, I can’t really say much about the illustrations themselves beyond them being striking.

There is little I can fault Watchmen on. Some of the volumes dragged a bit – looking at you Volume VII - and some of the additional material at the end of each volume felt at times dense and/or unnecessarily. Can’t say I’m that invested in the scientific observations of owls – again, looking at you Volume VII.

Still, Watchmen is great and I think most would be doing themselves a disservice by not giving it a chance. Especially if you’re considering watching any of its’ adaptions.

What really is there to say about Watchmen that hasn't been said already? One of the greatest works of graphic novel fiction ever made.

Next time I read this novel I promise I'll try and give my own opinion. Because there will be next time. At least one...
