It’s obvious why this is regarded as one of the best and most influential graphic novels of all time.
As a breakdown of the superhero-genre, it offers a vast array of complex characters and an even greater assortment of both distinct and subtle messages. Many of which I’m sure I have yet to discover.
Being no artist, I can’t really say much about the illustrations themselves beyond them being striking.
There is little I can fault Watchmen on. Some of the volumes dragged a bit – looking at you Volume VII - and some of the additional material at the end of each volume felt at times dense and/or unnecessarily. Can’t say I’m that invested in the scientific observations of owls – again, looking at you Volume VII.
Still, Watchmen is great and I think most would be doing themselves a disservice by not giving it a chance. Especially if you’re considering watching any of its’ adaptions.
Next time I read this novel I promise I'll try and give my own opinion. Because there will be next time. At least one...
