Watchmen

Alan Moore

4.3 AVERAGE

It’s confusing, thought-provoking and gripping. Realistic of a ‘Superhero’ career- It being never too rosy or ‘heroic’ altogether. The Characters are flawed, imperfect, so much so that you’d be disgusted at some of their actions. However, you reconcile with them. Because it’s them and their fully developed personality making them think and act just like us, humans. For decision-making almost felt real-time. There’s an unforeseen threat of War incoming and there’s someone out there after the lives of now-banned masked crime-fighters (under the Keen Act). Thus, the story sets off with the murder of the Comedian. One of Taking us back-forth, introducing us the characters and the reason behind their ‘present state’ of being.

At the end, my mind being itself a blank slate was bombarded with new sensations and self-revelation. The story puts forward the notion whether to attain the Greater Good (for Mankind), Justice, is it always a straight moral road? Are we too trusting of people with Greater Superhuman Powers with our lives? The People who in turn are selfish, crooked, and confused. Perhaps, it’s never ever a straight line.

I am truly traumatized. In a good way. There are many doubts left uncleared for me so would want to come back it again. At the beginning, it will make no sense. You’d want to throw it away, the book. But you’ll come back to it eventually. Because it’s not a regular comic book. It has purpose to serve: for you to read and think. So stick with it and you’ll be well surprised.

To imitate Rorschach: Too good. Can’t put look away. Need to know more.

My first experience reading a comic. There were lots of characters and storylines to follow. The graphics are excellent, and helped me understand the connecting storylines. Overall I enjoyed Watchmen. However, I had a hard time looking past the deeply misogynistic themes, despite acknowledging that it was written in 1987 and 'of its time'.

Very brilliant storytelling through multiple mediums. I loved the background stories in the newspaper articles, Hollis’s book excerpts, interviews, etc. Well thought & drawn out world, very immersive.

This books is very profound and resonates not only with our understanding of values and codes but also, through the nearly omnipotent Dr. Manhattan, our understanding of time and the meaning it gives to the events marking our existence. It may be a comic book but this masterpiece has made me think as much as any literary classic and deserves a spot on the shelf of any reader with an open my mind. Ready to listen to the minds of old men who have lived and interpret to come to our own understanding of life and how we should live it.

I will think about this for the rest of my life
