2.75 - A lot of potential, but not well done. I have heard it gets better with each book, I hope so. I may take another look at this series at a later date.

The plot and characters were enjoyable, but it could have been written better. The author jumped povs the entire book without warning so it got a bit confusing reading at times

This book is objectively not very good. It's a 'fated mates' trope paranormal romance with a super-alpha vampire hero and a rhythm that's basically sex-fight scene-sex-fight scene-sex-end.

I kept skimming along because the author dangled some interesting genetics-related plot threads, and because the contrast between the Totally Alpha vampire males and the way they turn into squishy teddy bears when around 5 year old girls was absolutely hilarious.

***2.5*** which is honestly probably generous...

This gets the "book full of stupid assholes" label. Cara is stupid, Talen is stupid, and they make some unfathomably stupid decisions.

Alpha-hole only works for me when the heroine is fierce enough to not be steamrolled. Cara is not. And when one of his abilities is to rob her freewill, and he not only uses it on her, but threatens to do it repeatedly, I'm just done. Cara always has a flare of temper in response, but rolls over in like half a second because she's so hot for him.

So much ugh.

Other tropes in this book that I'm not a fan of:

-damsel heroine
-heroine who has skills that are useful, but hero cares nothing for logic, he's going to make her stay home and knit or something
-toddler chosen one (Cara's toddler daughter)
-"he's hot so it's okay" syndrome
-hero determined to shelter the heroine from pretty much all aspects of life
-hero with less than zero respect for her right to make her own choices, to have some damn agency
-insta-preggo
-villains are basically mustache-twirling eeeeeeevil - more than once, the author notes the palpable cloud of evil that surrounds them

Pretty sure I'm not continuing this series.

Everything in this book felt forced, Cara has no autonomy whatsoever. Smut scenes weren't enough to make up for the snooze of the rest of the story

I've been reading the Dark Protectors in random order as they show up with promo prices. The relationship development between the hero and heroine is the strongest part of the narrative, both believable and hot. As with the others in the series, I find too much page time devoted to a 'too cute' child who is some kind of chosen one. The big stumbling block for me though are the villains. They are just too over the top evil. They are also really noticeable in appearance. In the days of camera phones and internet, how are they keeping a low profile?
