Xao Sheng is a poor boy who works hard to cutting grass to make money to feed his mother and him. Then Xoa finds a magic pearl that grants he and his mother a better life, but when some of the locals become jealous of their new lifestyle and try and steal the pearl; Xao Sheng is forced to swallow the pearl to hide it. This leads to a serious of extraordinary, and heart breaking, events.

Beautifully illustrated by Paul Morin, this book by Julie Lawson is great for older children.
