It‘s been many many years since I read the Harry Potter books. Rereading them all in 2024. And will read it from the illustrated versions (at least up until the 5th book, bc the 6th and 7th do not have an illustrated version yet)
A few thoughts from this one:
- You can definitely tell that this book was written for younger readers, because I'm not used to other books repeating things that were mentioned in the first book in the sequel. That doesn't bother me, but it's interesting to see.
- There were definitely a few scenes that I had completely forgotten were in the book. I particularly enjoyed the Valentine's Day scenes, which made me laugh.
- I really enjoy reading it from th illustrated version. It’s sich a beautiful book.

Harry talks to snakes and everyone hates him for it and he hangs out in a girls bathroom for months. Also Snape is a bad guy.
Excellent book for kids and adults alike. My 7-year-old stayed up past 11 pm reading the last 3 chapters by herself, so if that is not indicative of a great story, then I don't know what is. Looking forward to starting the 3rd book in the series soon.

The prefect book for a cozy fall read. I definitely love chamber of secrets more as a book than a movie. Much more interesting and intriguing.
Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets has always been one of my favourites of the series. This book gets a little darker than the first, especially in the way that it parallels Harry and Voldemort.
“I wondered, you see. There are strange likenesses between us, after all. Even you must have noticed. Both half-bloods, orphans, raised by Muggles. Probably the only two Parselmouths to come to Hogwarts since the great Slytherin himself. We even look something alike..”
As evil as he is, there is something compelling about Tom Riddle. Why does a person choose to do evil? Why does a person choose to do good? Riddle experienced first hand the hatred of Muggles towards Wizards; something that threatened his family and caused him to be cast aside into a world of abuse. Harry, too, was raised unloved, but at the start of his life was loved so fiercely by his mother that he was saved. He carried that love with him. Riddle never had that - he was not only not loved, he was hated by his father.
This book is important because we see Harry struggle with the very same thing. He feels, in some ways, that he is not truly good or worthy of being a Gryffindor. He wonders if he is not truly a Slytherin. But all around him are peers and mentors who guide him: “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
Even Ginny and Dobby face a struggle with shame, as they grapple with the evil they come to learn of and their own roles in its continuation. But in the end they too are saved by the empathy and love of Harry and Dumbledore.
In the beginning of the book, Harry is the loneliest he has ever felt. After experiencing true friendship and belonging for the first time in his life he has been transplanted back to his abusive beginnings. What makes this opening so satisfying is the fierceness with which he is saved, the ripping of the bars from his windows and the hilarity of Dursley’s red, spitting face as he flies off with his best friend. It is a small moment of many small moments, where people choose eachother over all else. Voldemort traps the worst of himself in his horcruxes to ensure he survives. But the rest of the characters trap the best of themselves in one another, so that they never forget who they truly are, even in the darkest of times.
