This book takes what is, frankly, an absurd concept (they really do eat books, y'all, they just straight-up eat them cover and all) and approaches it with unironic sincerity and brutal worldbuilding. I'm torn between wanting it to have been much longer and being charmed by its concise, effective plot. Wonderful read.
Very random book as I do not read much SF but chose it from the Goodreads Challenge.
But it made me think I should read more from this genre. I truly not expected to hear that they have Romanian heritage, (also saw the author having to explain Romanians are not the same with Romas, they do not represent the nomad spirit here but connections with Dracula) but was pleasantly surprised.
It got me stuck to see how the story develops, where it takes off, to learn more from their way of being, eating, growing. their traditions with mothers, kids etc. It was truly a new experience.
But it made me think I should read more from this genre. Boring, inattention to important details, utterly predictable at every turn and not thoughtful enough about its core concept for that to be acceptable. Total dud.
DNF at 39%. The premise was interesting but the execution was lacking. I struggled becoming interested in the story.
