The Book Eaters

Not too sure how I felt about this one. The idea of book eaters is such a unique premise that I really had no idea what to expect going into the story. I was expecting a bit more horror aspects and thought the "mind-eater" would be a shock factor rather than something that is already known to this world. I hoped for a bit more lore about how the book eaters came to be. Overall, it was an interesting read.

Such a unique concept for monsters, it kept me engaged even though it was slower paced.

Started this story expecting a fantasy adventure story exploring the lives of Book Eaters, a sub-species of humans that eat books to survive. But the majority of the book explores how Book Eater society is much like a fundamentalist cult, due to how small their community is and their will not to go extinct. We follow Devon and Cai as they try to escape, and flash back in time to see how Devon slowly grows disillusioned with her society.

For heavily tattooed, queer friends from Arizona who are recovering after escaping a Christian cult, or anyone who enjoys well written, Dark Gothic stories about kick-ass women who will do anything they can to save the people they love.

I enjoyed this book. I didn't love it right away. The first quarter or so maybe more is introducing the FMC Devon. What her life was like in childhood, the trials she endured, what the culture & the lives on book eaters looked like, how that took a toll on her, her relationships with others etc. After finishing I am happy that we were able to experience that because it gave me so much more perspective of Devon & why she was the way she was. It made the ending so much more meaningful knowing what Devon was fighting for. I truly loved the writing in this book. It makes you think about what you are willing to do for love, the extent you will go for somebody that you can give up on but refuse not to. Overall, this was a beautiful story.

Whew. I don’t even know where to start with this one 🤷‍♀️ I guess “flabbergasted” is the word? Because I... did not enjoy this.

The plot? Meh 🙄
The characters? Who?
The vibe? Not for me.

To be fair, the concept is cool. Brain food? Love that for her 🍴🧠 And the author’s writing is definitely unique—like “what-did-I-just-read” kind of unique 🌀✍️

BUT if I wasn’t listening to the audiobook version 🎧, this book would’ve been a hard DNF. No question.

Not my genre, not my thing, but hey—maybe it’s yours? 🤷‍♀️🖤
