Although this was book number 4.5 of the series, the enjoyable plot was easy to follow. This is the second story of Mr. Scalzi I have read and I quite enjoy his light writing style. I really should read the Old Man's War series!

I read this short story as part of an anthology. I didn't realize it was part of Old Man's War, a series I previously enjoyed the debut novel, but got no further (yet).
Scalzi doesn't develop a lot here in this story, although it IS a short story, and CAN stand on it's own. However, his consistent deadpan delivery is flawless, even if it is a little repetitive.
Loved it. I'll definitely fill in the Old Man's War gaps in my bookshelf very soon.

Scalzi details combat well (even arena combat) and does a good job of sketching the rough aspects of alien morphology, letting the reader fill in the fine grain. Still, this little essay hovers weirdly between the chronology of the rest of the book series, and probably should have been incorporated into one of the novels instead.

Scalzi brings his usual playful style and tone to this novella (novella? short story? whatever...). A solid and funny addition to the Old Man's War universe. Well worth the $0.99 price of entry.
