I LOVED Jason/Henry ♥♥♥

SpoilerMy only complaints:
- How long it took for them to be together. I don't mind angst at all, but jfc were all those obstacles really necessary ? I admit to skipping pages to get to the part were they FINALLY got together.
- The parents thing towards the end, mhm, I still don't know how I feel about that ? It felt a bit out of the blue and then it was handled so fast, idkidk. It was realistic tho.

I really enjoyed the first half of the book, where Jay is returning to Hancock, meets Henry again, recovers from his accident and they eventually act on their attraction.
I then found the misunderstandings/running away sections a bit too contrived. I would have enjoyed the resolution of all the threads just as much had Jay stayed or just returned Traverse City with none of the Tom things. However, towards the end he did say he'd needed to sort himself out first before he could move forward with Henry.
The writing was light and pacy making for a easy read. Overall enjoyed the story.

When I began reading this book, it gave me 4-star vibes but as I kept reading, it took my star rating down a notch. I feel a 2.5 star is a very generous rating but at the same time, the issues I had with the character development of both MCs could be me.

Spoilers ahead:

Jason is a baker who returned to his hometown because the house on his family land burned and his presence was needed to identify the body and take care of the paperwork. He got into an accident upon his arrival in town during a snowstorm and was saved by the skin of his teeth by Good Samaritan - Henry. Fast forward a bit and we find out Henry was one of his childhood BFFs and it was kind of a 15-year reunion for them. Henry had always held a flame in his heart for Jayson unbeknownst to Jason… Henry takes care of him and they hook up and the story goes on…

Jason’s character is marred by depression, PTSD, paranoia… and though those are legitimate reasons for his nutty behavior, I get it. My problem was he seemed to be making silly decisions at every turn. Henry on the other hand was too nice, too much of a doormat, he should have made Jason work to get back in his graces. Overall, lovely wort, could have been a little longer to flesh out the characters a bit more.

The House on Hancock Hill was an emotionally satisfying read. The characters made me feel, the town itself was quite a central character, and there was just enough of a mystery to keep me guessing. And secrets? Whoo boy, were there some whoppers. I strongly recommend this to everyone!

This book consists of 2 parts. The first one is about the romance. Jason reconnects with his childhood best friend and they very quickly develop feelings for each other. For me it was too fast, but it was also sweet.
Except Jason is not ready for commitment, because he is a mess. Cue part 2, where Jason goes on some self-discovery and healing journey. And at that point I considered giving it up, because it made me feel all kinds of confused about my own life decisions and I didn't want to delve too deep. But I was able to put aside my own problems and focus on Jason. And I liked what I read. The healing process was slow and painful and I liked that he took the time to figure things out before rushing into a relationship he wasn't mentally ready for.

Warning: Jason might have some feelings for Henry, but he wants you to know that he is not a monk. Take that how you will.

I enjoyed it. 3.5 stars

A very cozy read. However, at the same time, misunderstandings and angst that follows make it pretty intense, so you won't get bored.
