This book is very much like dating. It seemed fun, sweet, and exciting at first, but towards the end, the 'cute weird habits' became major annoyances. Romcoms tend to follow a pattern: meet-cute, some flirting, dating, an issue that could break them up forever, and then the happily ever after. If done properly, it leaves you rooting for the couple.

This book did not have that. Although I rooted for this couple at first, I did not once the main character started displaying rather toxic behavior. Extreme evasiveness and throwing stuff at someone is not cute. Then going down a spiral even after someone clearly communicates what is going on. It was originally a 4 - 4,5 start read for me, but after the 80% mark it went down to 2,5.

I finished this book almost a month and a half ago and thinking about how there was no mention of MC getting therapy for her issues still makes me mad.

It was fine. Not special other than the chicken (which comes from a real life story of the author’s friend!). I like happy endings so I appreciate that aspect of this book but the story line was lagging. This book definitely reads like a YA story where the characters have some work to do but it’s not a dramatic journey.

I loved the concept of this book, but it fell flat in a few different ways. I usually eat up the grumpy-sunshine trope, but I didn't realize it was more of a manic pixie girl. Trixie just was exhausting to me as a main character. I think there was a lot of potential for this book, but it just fell flat and dragged on. I did love the chicken though. Even if it felt like the chicken was forgotten halfway through the book.

Meh. The characters are hard to care about and the premise of spending big bucks on a stray chicken is silly.

Trixie incidentally meets Bear because of a chicken crossing the road. And because of said chicken, she needs a new place to live. It turns out Bear has a room.

What comes next is the frustration of adults with the inability to communicate or regulate their emotions. This leads to messy, immature responses and irritating points of the story.

This book has a few cute moments, don’t get me wrong. But there are so many cliches and stupid societal rules that these two can’t seem to shake.

I also was frustrated that there were so many opportunities to really get deep with Trixie and Bear and their traumas, but they were only slightly more than a skim over.

That’s the moral of the story for this one for me - so much opportunity, but the author just kept it light and didn’t go there.
