choosing to give this 4.5 stars just bc i’ve heard the sequel is even better than this one. i have very high expectations

Also I have to say this book was completely different from what I expected it to be. The plot twists weren't really shocking to me even though I couldn't figure out the details on my own but most things were pretty obvious.
edit: I think I found out why I didn't like this book as much as I could have: there is just literally no hope. There are no good characters, no friends, no good guardians or figures Poppy can rely on that survive. And honestly it's just depressing and also perfect breeding ground for a toxic relationship (Poppy has no one else left and everyone besides HIM wants to kill her so..)
I will not read the next books because why would I just make myself purposely feel bad?
I do think Jennifer L. Armentrout is a great writer though and will definitely try another one of her series and maybe I will like them better :)

He touched my cheek with his fingers. "I hope you realize that no matter what anyone has ever told you, you are more worthy than anyone I've ever met."
This book was certainly a trip. Not sure how I can even begin to unpack this. Well, first of all, I told myself not to read this book when it became really popular and everyone was reading it. That is because usually, hyped books have mostly been a disappointment to me. When I started reading From Blood and Ash I was convinced I wouldn't get far until I'd stop reading.
I ended up consuming the whole thing within two days.
Sure, the plot and world building were a bit questionable sometimes. Then again, I rarely read fantasy books so I feel like I'm no judge when it comes to that. It just felt a bit hollow from time to time, and sometimes I just stared at a wall for a good few minutes trying to figure out what is going on. I genuinely didn't expect the author would throw vampires and werewolves into the mix, and when she did, for a moment it felt like I was reading a slightly better copy of Twilight (which, for the record, I'm certainly not a fan of). I got over it, though, and ended up enjoying the book a lot.
The characters are alright. Every single time I thought to myself "Oh wow, I really like this character", they ended up dying. That was a bit of a bummer, but I was able to live with it. We also get a morally gray, dark haired man with questionable motives and pretty eyes. And he has dimples. The dimples were enough to save the whole book for me. The bar is clearly in the basement.
Anyways, yeah, I enjoyed reading this. I even stayed up till 5 am just to finish this goddamned book, and I regret nothing. I'm still surprised that a hyped book ended up being this good - I might even reread it someday.
