This book stared out kind of slow and I had a hard time getting into it but once it picked up I enjoyed it. I enjoyed the characters and the romance as well as the world, though the world building was confusing in the beginning there is a good reason for that. I’m exited to read the next book and continue the story

That said I do think it’s important to mention the the POC rep in this book is terrible. Most of the characters in this book are white and those who aren’t are in service to main white characters. Additionally one of them turns into an wolf. Not to mention their names, Tawny and Kieran, mean brown and “little dark one” respectively. (This was pointed out by mynameismarines on tiktok I didn’t realize it myself)

From Blood and Ash is an incredibly intriguing and gripping book. While I dropped off .5 points for some of the blunt worldbuilding (especially in the first third of the book), the rest of the story, characters, and dialogue is some of the best in the new adult fantasy genre. I haven't loved a book so much since I read A Court of Mist and Fury by Sara J Maas and, truthfully, there are a lot of similarities. The main love interest of the book might as well be Rhys, and I'm not complaining in that department. Again, while some of the world building in the beginning felt more "tell" rather than "show", it didn't break my emersion very much, and I was more than willing to look over it considering this is Armentrout's first full fantasy book. If you are a fan of Throne of Glass, ACOTAR, and Shadow and Bone this is a must read. I'm very excited to pick up the next book and devoir it as quickly as I did this one.

The writing made me attached to the characters and makes them likable. The plot is faced paced, hard to put down.

What could have been better?
Guys, I really wanted to like this book, but? I was bored. I was so bored almost the whole time. The first 3/4s of the book took me almost a month to get through. And then EVERYONE told me this was a very steamy piece of fiction...and for me, personally, it wasn’t as steamy as the hype, it was steamy but the hype had me having different expectations. And this won goodreads romance last year...and beat Beach Read, WHICH I LOVE....SO...I DON’T KNOW FRIENDS, I’m an outlier I know, but I was very bored by the storytelling.

What I enjoyed?
When it picked up for the last quarter (maybe less 😂), I enjoyed it! Also I LOVE POPPY. Poppy is one of those badass girl characters that you root for from beginning to end.

Also, Hawke? Yeah, he was definitely swoon worthy.

I’ll be honest, MOST of the characters presented I did like (besides the antagonists obviously), I was curious to see what would happen to them.

And, overall, there seems to be a good plot being created for the series and some world building.

I HAVE HEARD the second book is a lot more fast paced and better than the first so I will be giving it a try.

So, while I was very bored, the end made up some of that for me making it a more enjoyable read than I thought at the beginning.

I still recommend this book! Mostly, because a lot of people I know really LOVE this book and LOVE this series...so maybe I’m just missing something? Which is completely possible.

Used to love this series but now see many glaring issues and honestly would rather read more diverse books than this.
