Still shocked this was in the GR Choice romance category at all, let alone the winner - it is by no means a romance. It is structured like a very different story than it ultimately turns out to be, and although most of the book feels like prologue and setup, a lot of the world building isn’t clearly explained. I would have preferred a more straightforward narrative that sacrificed some of the “reveals” for clarity and character growth. The twists felt very transparent and I was frustrated by the character of Tawny, who feels very tokenized and underdeveloped. I expect there’s maybe one compelling book’s worth of material out of the trilogy...but I’m probably sucked in enough to keep reading.

I needed a break from school and this was perfect for that! Kind of had a YA-feel to it with the “Chosen One” trope in the beginning but overall this is your standard romance novel.

I went into this with low expectations because, despite the overwhelming glowing reviews, there are a lot of negative ones. Even so, I was bored and confused for the majority of the book. There were intriguing parts and the pace picked up, but the main character was ridiculously slow to put things together and made me roll my eyes often. The love interest and his friend are the best of the cast and have some funny lines, and I will say that I am curious enough about where it ended to try the next book. I’m hoping the writing in the next one is more engaging and less repetitive.

This book contains:
-Violence
-Crude Language
-Sex and Sexual Themes

Fear and bravery are often one and the same. It either makes you a warrior or a coward. The only difference is the person it resides inside.

I'm so torn about this one. The first third was utterly confusing and frustrating, the middle third much more interesting, and the last third action-packed and engrossing. I enjoyed Poppy as a narrator, and liked figuring things out along with her - except when it was easy to figure out twists she was blind to.
HIS. GODDAMN. TEETH. COME ON.
There were a lot of things that bugged me about it though, including the incredibly cheesy lines (ughhhhh so cheesy), the lazy world building (Atlantians???), and how quickly Poppy got over her grief in every situation. But I am definitely going to pick up the next book - mainly because I got it free, let's be honest - and I can say that I have enjoyed a vampire book. So there.

Read with the Intertextuals Book Club :)

This book had me hooked from start to finish. I could not sleep because I was THAT invested in the story. If you love fun, sexy fantasies with romance, I recommend it. That being said, there were some cliches and plot holes.
I am so sick of massive age differences in romances! A 19 year old doesn't need to fall in love with man who is hundreds of years older then her.
Definitely not a perfect book, but one I loved nonetheless. If you don't like romances, this isn't for you.
