This is the book that I made my mom read to me so many times I'm sure she had it memorized. Absolutely a favorite children's book!

Edit: read aloud again this academic year. Kids laughed out loud! So did I.

Read this aloud to my fourth graders. Absolutely hilarious. We all loved it!

Silverstein I missed somehow as a kid. Weird, delightful, sad... And not age appropriate for my preschoolers.

Read this again recently with my daughter. The first time I read this book was in middle school - our gifted education teacher read it out loud to us. I loved it then and I still love it today. With humor and touches of sadness, this book opens up avenues for some great conversations about being true to who you are, fitting in with the world, etc. Perfect for middle school age :)

I'm probably always going to love Uncle Shelby's poetry most, but that doesn't mean this story isn't adorable. You *can* change who you are, but do you really want to?

It has been probably more than 25 years since I last read this book. It holds up.

Update/note, 5 March 2020 — Just to clarify, this book is heartbreaking. Even as a kid I thought it was sad. As an adult I think it's funnier, which helps, but still.

This is a book that is meant for children who are a little older. It has more words and fewer illustrations than Shel Silverstein's typical books. Lafcadio is a lion who becomes a good shot, joins the circus, becomes more and more like a human, and, in the end, doesn't feel like he belongs with either humans or lions. He does know one thing though... he loves marshmallows. I enjoyed reading this, though it definitely wasn't my favorite of Silverstein's books. It is filled with some good humor and messages that we can all relate to.
