A super easy read that is funny and real. The characters are quite unhinged but I think there are some pretty relatable moments when you embrace the dark humour.

  • the characters were so deeply unlikable, but they were still enjoyable to read about. i appreciated how the author didn't resort to making the characters bigots, which seems to be the common thing to do to make sure your character is unlikable. jillian and megan were both so uniquely insufferable.
  • the audiobook is read by the author, and while her voice's monotony did work pretty well with the style of the book, it was easy to drift out. it also made it difficult to keep track of which character's pov we were in, since it just. constantly. sounded. the. same.
  • ultimately don't really know what the book was trying to say. defs a no plot just vibes book but i don't really feel like this book had... substance? i was cringing at jillian and rolling my eyes at megan, but that was it...??? am i missing something?

I get that the writing is a specific style but it’s just repetitive here. I also get that everything is supposed to be grim, but there’s other books that do the “weird strange unreliable narrators” genre WAY better. An endorsement on the back of the book by Leland Cheuk writes “the funniest book I’ve read in a long time, but also one of the most important ones” - they must’ve been absolutely cooked reading this because I didn’t learn anything and I didn’t laugh once.

this book is exactly what it feels like when all the snow melts away but the days are still short, the fields muddy and slimy, and the weather still unforgiving. spring may be around the corner, but in the meanwhile everything is ugly and hateful, and only getting more so.

if there are two genres i love, it’s a slice of life kinda book and a “crazy unhinged woman” kinda book. and man, did this one deliver. the ending definitely fell flat and i fully expected something wild with the buildup for the last ~20 pages of the book. it just didn’t feel like it had a conclusion/felt a little unfinished? i was really praying for everyone’s downfall and i really wanted to see that lol… time to check out some of the authors other books.
