The murder mystery is reasonably good, in the sense that I only figured out who the killer was a few pages ahead of the reveal, but only has a short story's worth of material. If you're going to read this book, do it for the local ambiance and colorful characters, which is actually enjoyable if you go in prepared for the slow journey through the story.

What dropped my review from a full four stars was my annoyance at the way the main character's personal arc ended up. Felt very forced to me. Not sure if it was supposed to be romantic, but was written to be all about the physical relationship--not in a graphic way, but with enough detail I wouldn't recommend it to younger readers. Blech.

Original DNF review:
I really wanted to like this book for the Alaskan feel, which went so far beyond the 'there was snow' you might get from an author who doesn't really know Alaska. I'm still thinking I might go back to it someday when I have a better mood match for a really slow murder mystery. (At 40 pages in to a 200 page book the main character was *just* about to start investigating a couple of disappearances, which I only assume turned out to be a murder because of the title.)
