I wish this book had been stretched out into two or maybe three books. The world building and the writing was amazing and the characters are likable and easy to empathize with. All and all, really good book. I would for sure recommend it to someone looking for a good fantasy book
It was reading too young and I wasn’t interested in the writing or the characters. I kept thinking that I could push myself but it would ultimately feel unsatisfactory.

I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the sequel. For the most part the world building is top notch. The setting is different and interesting. However, I wish there had been more information about the political divisions of Renthia itself. Are the countries separate or they part of a larger whole? Do they get along? There seems to be more than one queen so I think they are separate countries but they all seemed be governed by the same laws regarding the spirits. It was a bit confusing.

Fast paced and very plot driven. Loved every minute of it and the ending was surprising and very emotional. Because it was so fast paced I didn’t really get attached to any character even tho they were all well written.
This was definitely a story that was structured differently than any book I’ve read. I loved that we immediately had danger and high stakes and a villain. And I can’t wait to read book 2.

I’m an avid fantasy reader and because of this, I can often suspect or guess the ending or the twists in a book. It’s just how it is when it’s impossible to be 100% original. But Sarah Beth Durst exceeded my expectations for this novel in pretty much ever way. I tore through this in 2 days and have no regrets about it. From her world building, to her character development, to her infallible plot, this was a masterpiece.
