A very well researched and thorough view at Charles V and the impacts he had in his time. Fascinating in parts but quite dry and boring in others, this challenging read is good for people who want a different view of medieval Europe politics.

Very well written, definitely a warts-and-all portrait. Charles V's treatment of his mother (just to pick one example) was horrifying. He didn't see his kids for years at a time. He assassinated diplomats -- despite their immunity -- then lied about it. Etc. Nonetheless acc to Parker he was a reasonably successful king, by traditional standards. He maintained his inheritance despite being attacked by many powerful rulers, including France and the Ottoman Empire.

A slow going book. It took me about a month to finish this. I did enjoy it a lot and it's full of good information. But, it took me forever to read it.
