This book made my stomach hurt. It was also very hard to follow. DNF

Some good turns of phrase.

3.5/5

Rory Dawn’s story is not an easy one. This book gives a voice to a population often overlooked in our society. It doesn’t shy away from the unpleasant realities of growing up below the poverty line. Told in a mixture of prose, poetry, documents of the state, and Girl Scout handbooks this story showed a collage of a young girl’s life. Due to the nature of the narrative, it was sometimes difficult to find Rory herself. A privilege of the reader, the observer without first hand experience, it is easy to judge Rory for turning away from her chances to escape. This book left a heaviness in my heart.
