yknow that tiktok audio of all the girls screaming with the violin music in the background? yeah this is what this play feels like

Tragedy of weakness

An uneventful drama that is carried by its writing, at least in the Raeburn translation.

yet another greek tragedian tackles the endless murder/morale problem of Agamemnon sacrificing his daughter Iphigenia for a favourable wind, who is then murdered by his bitter wife - her and her new lover, Aegisthus, are then murdered by her vengeful kids Orestes and Electra, who then are subject to foreign votes to decide their fates, as matricide is a whopping great crime.

Klitemnestra ima dosta snažnije razloge i izgovore, al zahvaljujući mizoginiji, Elektra pobjeđuje.

So I had to read this for school. And I was really excited actually, because I love Greek mythology so much, but this book was kinda flat plot wise.

The thing is this play is very confusing if you know nothing about Greek mythology (thank god i do, because if I didn’t I would fail my exam). Also the grammar structure is really weird. I guess that’s because of the translation.

Anyway this story was basically a pair of siblings wanting to avenge their father’s dead by killing their stepdad and mother.
And was really meh, to be honest.

(Also, side note: so I couldn’t help it, this book reminded me about the Sakamaki brothers from diabolik lovers 😂😂😂; and the mom in this book was soooo like Cordelia when they wanted to kill her)

they really did That™

Euripides is as good as Aeschylus or Sophocles. Here, he develops very interesting characters: Electra mourns her father's death, her husband is an example of nobility under poverty and Orestes is a coward with no confidence. He announces Hamlet. One of the best greek tragedies I've ever read.
