Trying so hard these days not to DNF, and over all I’ve been pretty successful… but this was a slog and I dropped it at about 50-60%. I’m more interested in and knowledgeable about Medieval philosophy than the average joe, less interested in but still game for a Sherlock Holmesian mystery… but this mashup of the two didn’t work for me. I would have preferred one without the other. The mystery, bogged down by philosophy and history, progressed waaayyy too slowly… Furthermore, although some of the ideas were clever (the labyrinthine library in particular), I was not attached to the characters and had little to no interest in the actual mystery. On the other side, the detailed history and philosophy, included for no other apparent purpose than to give a certain realism to the story — but also mixed up with fiction — seemed rather pointless. It’s presented sort of glibly, at arm’s length. It never goes very deep; there’s nothing here to challenge the reader beyond perhaps the mere intellectual exercise.

It’s well-written, and I can see how some people would enjoy it, but I dunno. Life’s too short.

Dense and verbose, sometimes to a fault. Still, an absolute banger of a book. Good, sometimes even subtle characterization,  a enjoyable mystery and also lot's of monks. I, for some reason, quite like monks. Adored the ending. A favorite.

What a terrible disappointment. If the purpose of reading this was to confirm how horrible the Catholic Church is and how much I hate religious zealoutry of all kinds, then job done. But I read it because I had been told for years that this is the epitome of cipher and puzzle based mysteries and I simply couldn’t overlook it.

Big lie. Maybe 5% of the book matches that description; the vast majority is about religion and politics and religious politics and it couldn’t have been more tedious and uninteresting. And, not to give spoilers, but when the final motive for the murders is revealed it is so painfully inane as to be infuriating.

One might think I should have known better given the subject matter, but I have read many books, mainly mysteries, set in churches and monasteries and almost none of them dwelt on religious topics in any great detail. But this is the second book by Umberto Eco that I have read and not enjoyed so that’s a lesson (finally) learned.

¿Cómo he conseguido terminarlo?
