Hawaii has a complex history and I enjoyed reading more about this part of it. Olivia was a strong, inspiring character.

It’s 1927 and Olivia West is breaking down barriers as a female pilot and dreaming of participating in the Dole Air Race, a high stakes contest to see which pilot and navigator can make the 2400 mile flight from San Francisco to Hawaii. She hitches her dream to a pilot with a plane and accepts the position as his navigator. What ensues is a harrowing ride across the Pacific where some will not survive. In 1987, Wren Summers inherits property and a barn where she finds a plane from the late 1920’s, she is intrigued enough to research the past.
Inspired by true events, this is a dual timeline novel of the fictional Olivia West and what might have occurred if a women had been able to participate as navigators or pilots in the The Dole Air Race. The plot lines were well aligned and the mystery of the connection between Olivia and Wren kept be engaged and coming back. I loved the in flight descriptions and loved the historical perspective of aviation in the late 1920’s. Overall an engaging book that prompted some addition googling down a rabbit hole to lean more.
