I read this book because one of my higher-level groups of students requested it for their book club read. The Killing Seas follows the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the days immediately following. This book is incredibly well written and is a book that I did not want to put down. I read the entire book in less than 3 hours. While the book does have some violence, it is not gratuitous, and it adds to the book in a meaningful way.
I think students will be able to connect with both characters, Sarah due to her self-absorption and Ruslan for his determination and endurance. I would say that more mature 5th graders could read it, but most middle schoolers should be able to access the text and comprehend the themes throughout. For more details regarding the content of the novel go to http://www.compassbookratings.com/reviews/index.php/review/view/1173, where they detail out why it is not appropriate contextually for younger readers.

Intense, but some things bothered me.
If family was first in Ruslan's culture (the strong culture that directed his life and beliefs), why did he choose to go with this girl he barely knew instead of try and find his father? Umm???

And honestly, I rather liked the ending.

It's hard to believe that the event this book is placed during (the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia) was so recent. This story reminded me of Holocaust survival books, You do what ever it takes to make it.
