There is one man who considers himself 'gay' who is briefly in the story. If you are sensitive to abuse between parents or even families (domestic abuse) then you may not want to read this book. It is the main theme although it is very very inspiring and shows how people can work through this! So sad! Prepare to cry!!! 😭

I genuinely adored this book! what happened later really upset me,

the fact Ryle hurt Lily multiple times and even tried to rape her hurt my heart

Hoover really was amazing at expressing how manipulative abusers can be and how despite their actions you still want to forgive them, it was beautifully written and so real

Yikes. Okay. I feel weird rating this. Overall, I didn't enjoy this book. However, I think it's important that Colleen Hoover wrote this, given that is sort of autobiographical in some ways. 

I do urge you to check out the trigger warnings for this book if you find abusive relationships triggering at all. I kind of knew what the themes were going in and I think that prevented me from being too shocked. 

Okay, now let's get into the review.

I will say that this book is pretty gripping. The first 100-150 pages or so feel pretty pointless, smutty and pretty uncomfortable, like a Hallmark movie or something you might find on Wattpad. It doesn't feel all that serious and the journal writing flashbacks were pretty cringe.

However, once everything starts to weave together and the big events start to happen, I did become pretty invested in the story. So if you're looking for a quick read to maybe get you out of a reading slump, that will also educate you on some pretty important topics and experiences, then this may the book for you.

The characters were okay. I hated Ryle at the start and now I know why, so I do think that Hoover wrote him pretty well. I think he was supposed to be a liiiiittle more charming that I found him, but maybe I am just a super duper awesome judge of character lol.

Alyssa was pretty annoying, but in the end, she made up for it. And I did love Atlas, tbh. What a guy. 

Lily, our main character, felt a little confusing at times because she wasn't really consistent with her actions, but hey, that's life.

The pacing and world-building was pretty good. It was quick paced and the back stories were relevant and believable.

However, the WRITING. Omg, the writing. It was atrocious at times. It just felt super amateur and it ripped me from the narrative so many times. There were so many terrible quotes, phrases, idioms, metaphors, similes, etc, that I just had to laugh. And when you're in the middle of a super tense terrifying scene, that's not good. The writing was also SUPER rushed. There were some pretty big life events in the book that were done and dusted in a page or two. We never got to spend much time in one scene and there were very minimal and basic descriptions about places, people and events. It was really weird. But I guess that's CoHo's style; she doesn't faff around. Her books are just that. It is what it is. But that's what I struggled with the most. (Especially in the sex scenes, the language she used is just gross lol).

I also docked around half a star for diversity since pretty much everyone is a straight, white, rich, CIS person. It would be nice to see some diversity. Obviously, this book does represent a group of people, so I still gave 3/10 stars for diversity. 

The ending was a bit disappointing, too, since there still feels like there's an element of danger (particularly for Emerson). But I did like that Lily had taken matters into her own hands for herself. The author's note kind of clarified some of the choices she made, but I still would have loved to see some more justice. Ya know?

Overall, wasn't my favourite book of all time, but I do think it's an important read in some aspects. If you're interested in the book at all, give it a go since it's quick and easy to read, and it might take you by surprise a little. Just be sure to check out the trigger warnings.

This book was literally everything I wanted to read and more. (Also I was coming into this book expecting this to be a "romance" as it is presented out to be). I think this might have been one of the best books I have ever read with such a strong, emotional, and important message. All I got to say is that there is reason that this book is so raved about and talked about on TikTok so much. I would say this book's importance is heavily effective for women and girls especially. I honestly would almost recommend this book to anyone as long as you have some tissues and you read the trigger warnings, if you can handle this then I would say just read the damn thing, you won't regret any of this book, not for one second!

If you read the book and the Author's note you know how heartbreaking this is, but how this is so important to not let anyone take advantage of you for any reason. I think this touched me a lot literally because of past experiences seeing how your mind can look at one person who goes through this and ask "Why don't they just leave?" While your still lying their confused of who this person is and what they stand for. But in that exact same breath you'll allow this for yourself. I think I felt a lot of what Lily felt with or for her mom as I did, honestly I was hoping things would change and they would become the bigger and stronger person, you know they can be but know nothing will be able to change the way they feel or will respond to the situations. I just hope Colleen Hoover knows how much this book impacted me and changed the way I view others or myself. This book also gave me hope within the Author's Note when she describes maintaining the good memories with her father while still understanding the abuse.

I would like to apologize to people who enjoy this book, it is my opinion, but I genuinely hated this book. I constantly wanted to throw it across the room. I never felt satisfied with any of the characters’ decisions and it only continued to get worse. I understand people love this book but I was underwhelmed and very unhappy once I read it myself.
