We have two romantic interests, the first thing the main character (Lily) sees the first romantic interest (Ryle) do is violently kick a chair. One of the first things he says to her is that wants to fuck her. After they start dating her, he later assaults her and has sex with her (while she is too stunned to properly consent) mere moments are.
They get married within the year and he continues to act violently when upset, abuses her, and gaslights her. His excuse? A trauma that happened to him when he was 6! I'm sorry, but I don't give a shit what happened to him literally 24 years ago, it's irrelevant.
Surely the second romantic interest must be better right? Wrong.
He (Atlas) was 18 when they first met, she was FIFTEEN. One of the first questions he asks her when they first meet is her age, and then upon finding out she's underage he's disappointed. It's as if he's thinking "I really want to have sex with this teenage girl but can't without going to prison for statutory rape. Damn."
But apparently that's not enough to stop a literal adult from making out with a child not so many months later. And, let's be honest, the only reason he visited her on her 16th birthday was so he could fuck her without it being a crime. I actually smiled at what happened next, he deserved it.
Neither of these situations are shown for what they really are: rape. The author vaguely frowns upon Ryle's assult of Lily but he's still shown as a potential love interest until he abuses her so badly she has to go to the hospital.
Most shockingly, the character that very nearly statutorily rapes Lily when she's a minor ends up becoming her savior later? He's not kind and generous like Hoover writes, he's a predator.
Then Lily has the audacity to complain about how women are always blamed by society for not leaving when she:
1. Married that man who assaulted her
2. Keeps their unborn child after she's left him for being abusive
3. Avoids his hospital when she needs medical care for his abuse so he doesn't get in trouble
4. Doesn't get a rape kit done even though it's pretty obvious she was raped
5. Never goes to the police
6. Lets him have a relationship with their newborn daughter, and a friendship with her
7. Doesn't get back together with him ONLY because she has a daughter
This isn't a romance novel, it's a tragedy, that's played off as having a relatively happy ending because she allegedly ended the cycle of abuse. Even though the abuser never had criminal charges laid against him. Even though he'll probably abuse the next person he dates.
Also, Hoover, you dont get to write a book about abuse, assault and rape and then choose to not include trigger warnings. Grow the fuck up.
Half a star because the writing style wasn't the worst thing in the world.
