The audiobook is good and I recommend this format. I feel if I had tried reading instead of listening then I would have DNF’d.

I was expecting more witchcraft than trauma reading this. Most reviews mention to read the content warnings and I agree. I tried to add as many as I could remember. At the height of the stories there’s abuse, mostly physical, and unwanted/unplanned pregnancy. I don’t want to spoil anything further so I’ll leave it at that but read the rest of the warnings in case something may be triggering to you. The beauty behind this story is the resilience of the three women and how their stories are connected. The women are alike and intertwined in more ways than one. We get their POV’s that take place over 400 years.

A couple of my favorite quotes (spoiler free):

“Witch. The word slithers from the mouth like a serpent. Drips from the tongue as thick and black as tar. We never thought of ourselves as witches, my mother and I, for this was a word invented by men. A word that brings power to those who speak it, not those it describes.”

“There are enough men in the world already”

My rating for Weyward is really because the story fell a little flat for me.  I've read a lot of other reviews that are around 2-3 stars and I agree with most other comments.  Just about everything awful that can happen to a woman does happen to at least one of the characters in this story.  There are no profound relationships that develop over the course of the novel so readers only get this slightest hint of the three protagonists interacting with those around them, even when the character is a close family member or close coworker.  The magical realism aspects are very unique, but also extremely subtle for the majority of the time.

I could not put this down! The way these three stories are woven together is brilliant! There are some pretty heavy topics in this book, but handled really well I felt.

The way this book graphically portrays every traumatic event a woman could imagine enduring throughout the centuries(public humiliation and witch trial, incest rape and emotional abuse, and extreme domestic abuse and control). All under the guise of telling a magical feminist story, but these women were powerless in their circumstances until discovering they had a magical connection to nature.

Also, the narrative lacks any real story and the only connection these women share is that they are victims of abuse. It hardly seems believable that the best outcome after centuries of women experiencing these atrocities and delivering magical justice to the horrible men inflicting pain on them  is for the latest generation to be Kate, perhaps the most helpless victim of them all.
