Even at an early age, listening to his father read stories of angels, dragons, wolves and knights, Augustin knew he wanted to grow up to fight monsters. From battling ambushing gangers as a cadet in the Astra Militarum to surviving hardships under the storm-ridden skies of Mars, he must overcome challenge after challenge for the chance to attain his dream.

While the physical trials required for an aspirant to become a Space Marine have been written about before, this depiction has plenty of personality, spending time early on setting up Augustin as a strong character with clear stakes. An entertaining, characterful debut, this is a satisfying story in its own right with hints of what to expect from Albert's novella Lords of the Storm.

The fifth story released for Black Library's Summer of Reading 2019, "Born of the Storm" follows Augustin, an Astra Militarum cadet who would go on to become a member of the Fulminators Space Marine Chapter.

The first half of the story is told as a series of vignettes, showing Augustin's journey that led to him being recruited. The second half covers his final test to become a full-fledge Fulminator.

It was interesting to see how Augustin was before being recruited as we rarely get to view the life of a Space Marine from before becoming one. The story also ends in a way that serves as a prequel to the author's novella Lords of the Storm. Overall I greatly enjoyed "Born of the Storm" and feel it is the best story of the Summer of Reading 2019 so far.
