Honestly it was oddly funny. Don't know how but I laughed bc Harker is just so dumb sometimes and Dracula is so interesting

I know this is meant to be one of the classic monster books but I found reading this book a bit of a chore near the end.

The characters were a bit interesting but there was nothing about them that made me particularly attached to them in any way. I think the best character for me was Van Helsing, he was interesting so if you want to know more about him I would read this book.

I felt that some of the passages in the book were a bit too long and unnecessary and I eventually became a bit bored and tended to skim these parts.

The world building wasn't very descriptive despite the fact that they travel to quite a few places, we got a basic description of the area but nothing about how it made the characters feel. I wish that the scenery had been a bit more descriptive and beautiful.

i read this book a couple years ago as it was on the BBC Top 200 list. I really enjoyed it and wrote a review but that was when I was on Shelfari and neither the review nor the date read transferred over to Goodreads :-(

Boring travelogue as one other reviewer said, I agree. Dracula started super interesting in the first quarter but kept dragging and dragging. Van Helsing is so boring and the foreshadowing is super obvious. Also, the female characters are just helpless completely

This was overally a pretty fun story!! It definitely could have been shorter, and by this point was really showing its age re: the gender dynamics. However, it was really fun exploring the originator of the Dracula image that's so ubiquitous today.

The first couple chapters are enthralling and the best in literature. The last three chapters are also great. But the entire middle might be on of the biggest drags in literature ever.

I’m not sure I’ve ever encountered a book where sexism will get people killed so explicitly—with the excruciating exception of the “gentlemen” trying to protect the fragile women to death, I really enjoyed this book. Very Victorian, written only through diary and letters, and a great audiobook performance by Simon Vance. Very enjoyable overall!
