I knew this book was bad going in. I really hoped it would be enjoyably bad like The Room or Birdemic. Some parts were, mostly the parts that became memes, but most of it wasn't even worth looking at.
Absolutely amazing. Great fun to read and a fascinating interpretation of the origins of the original Robin, not to mention some other primary characters. Definitely a recommended title for any Batman/comic fan.

The first three pages are the only reason it even got half a star.
An edited review of this book will come sooner or later, this last one was pretty bad.
Really liked how he reinvented Batman - made him very dark, very disturbed, his awful relationship with the JLA. But it was too over the top. Plus, the women were pretty awful.
But I'll read the next one just to see where he goes with it.

This was awesome. A superbly dark take on batman and the origins of robin. My only complaint was that the story didn't really have an end. All of these elements that were coming together went nowhere. Maybe there is another one?

I gave 2.25 because I wanted to justify that I didn't waste time. This is not a story but more like a writing prompt. It's incomplete, it's just a build-up and...it's not great. The reason everyone has rated this book so low is because people find hope here in the first few issues that this would be good, awesome even, but it never lives up to that. The story is meandering...but it had hope. If Miller was, I don't know, up to the task, then this could have been another awesome book like Year One...but it's not even close. I loved a lot of things about this book and THAT is the reason I hate this book more. It just sets up so much and does nothing with all that. On top of that, people are randomly kissing each other and there are unnecessary hot chicks running about being nothing but eye candy.

I've never had so many conflicting opinions about one thing. Recommended to me by a friend, I found myself utterly baffled when reading his copy.
For every moment I found myself tearing out my hair in sheer frustration (while shouting at the pages for Miller's complete yet gradual collapse, I couldn't help but love a little of the insanity. Even if I knew it was bad for me.
Described to me as the 'junk food' of comic books, it really is a condensed piece of work which distills the medium and hopes to deliver it in a package that is total and utter lunacy.
