Bardugo is a great writer, but I struggled to engage with the main characters.

good premise, badly executed. loved leigh bardugo's grishaverse books and was really excited about this one, but it was not what I expected. the first half of the book is too long and not interesting. story picks up in the second half, but can't save the first half.

will continue to give this author a chance, but the familiar was not it.
dark fast-paced

Stunningly heterosexual. And somehow made even moreso by
the last minute vague gay situationship.
The book wanted to be too many things and ended up
not being a true tragedy, which is disappointing. In a beautiful world this would've been a tragedy about a toxic relationship between Luiza and Valentina, but alas.
I liked reading about the courtly machinations and how Luiza navigated them, but I think this novel would've been stronger just from her POV, that way you don't have any insights she doesn't. Generally a fun read and an interesting premise but never quite came together.
