This was a tough one to rate.
It didn't grab me early on - I was bored and didn't really have the desire to return to it. I felt like I couldn't keep the characters straight, but I knew everything about what they were wearing, down to the color of the thread in their garments. There were so.many.details. about their wardrobe. That made me want to rate this a 2. But, ask I kept going, the story got more solid, and the characters became more intriguing, and in the last 1/3rd of the book things really took off, so we're going with a 3.
This had been on my to-read list for a long time and the audiobook was a great choice. The narrator is fantastic, and truthfully, if I'd read a physical copy of this, it'd likely be a DNF.
In the end I just think it could've used a lot more editing, especially in the beginning. It kind of felt like two different books: the first half is more focused on the politics of the Spanish Inquisition, and the second half is more about the story. That's not what I was expecting or looking for, so I was a little disappointed, but I do think it found it's way by the end.
I'd still recommend this to anyone who loves books with a strong female protagonist, magic, and historical fiction -but I'd highly recommend the audiobook version so you can speed through the first half parts.
